From the days in which I began my training under my mentor Mitth, I had always meditated in such a way that I wasn't trying to accomplish something. You might say that this was do to poor direction, but I don't remember ever asking Mitth how to "appropriately" meditate. So, when I did, I would sit on the floor in my bedroom, or on a bench outside, and just breathe.

Eventually even the breathing ceased to be my focus and there was nothing to do except sit there, for no reason, letting my mind wander with no real point to doing it.

There are many ways to meditate, but I've always found this method to be the most useful. As you sit with your eyes closed, if you focus on nothing in particular, your thoughts will begin to focus on parts of your mind that you may not have had access to otherwise. I personally find that I tend to get new ideas, new knowledge and wisdom, or maybe solutions to problems that I hadn't previously considered.

Even if you don't have this experience, to sit and do nothing will at least bring you to a better understanding of yourself as you let go of your surroundings and baser instincts. You might say that given these goals, it is not exactly "pointless". Well, the idea is to just sit and close your eyes. If you get nothing, you lose nothing. Don't expect a result. Leave your wants and desires behind.
